Symbolize by Size

Updated: Apr 17, 2022

Showing quantitative data through symbology.

Symbolizing by size is best used when displaying a count or amount at a certain location.

For example, with a vacant housing units map in the layers we can adjust the style of symbol to reflect different counts and amounts.

Adjusting this will show minimums and maximums for the map. I chose to look at Alaska, a state with a very low population density. The size fo the symbols remained the same pretty much with any change I tried to show, suggesting to me that in areas like this with such small numbers it may not be useful to symbolize by amount or size because at a certain scale it doesn't help to further visualize the data.

Editing the way the data is classified will adjust how the data is shown in the map.

Changing the symbol style is easy in the symbol menu. You can also input an exact HEX color code. As someone who formerly worked in marketing I appreciate this feature and see how it can be useful when preparing presentations and maps for organizations or companies along a brand line. You can even go so far as to put finishing touches on the symbol such as transparency adjustments and outlines.
